Watch Our Undercover Footage of U.S. Horses Exported to Mexico for Slaughter -- Then Take Action

WARNING: This video contains graphic images.

Two state laws and numerous court decisions closed the doors on the last remaining U.S. based horse slaughter plants. These tremendous victories underscore the urgent need for passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503/S. 311). As our video shows, the increased flow of American horses to Mexico and Canada results in brutally long trips that end in a grisly form of slaughter. The need for federal legislation has never been more urgent than it is today.

H.R. 503/S. 311 would both end the slaughter of American horses for human consumption and prohibit their export for slaughter in other countries.

TAKE ACTION
Check to see if your U.S. Representative is already a co-sponsor of H.R. 503 and if your two U.S. Senators are co-sponsors of S. 311.

If they are, please visit this version of this web page to thank them. If not, please call them today to urge them to co-sponsor the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. You can reach your federal legislators by calling the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121, or click here to find their Capitol office phone numbers.

After you make your phone calls, fill in and submit the form on the right to automatically send an email—including a link to our video detailing the grisly slaughter of horses over the border—to your U.S. Representative and Senators urging them to support and pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.

Congress receives a lot of email. Please remember to edit the text below with your own words so that your message will stand out and have a greater impact.

Dear [ Decision Maker ],

Please support the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503/S. 311) to end the slaughter of American horses for human consumption and prohibit their export for slaughter in other countries.

Your support now is more important than ever, in light of the recent court rulings declaring horse slaughter illegal in Texas and Illinois -- tens of thousands of our horses are being exported to Mexican and Canadian slaughterplants. Horses are dragged alive, crammed into trucks for hours on end in brutal heat, and ultimately stabbed to death in some of these plants.

If you have not yet cosponsored this bill, I respectfully urge that you do.

For those of you who don’t know, Pete was the first horse we took in during the very beginning of Habitat for Horses.  He was 8 months old when I bought him from the killer-buyer at an auction and brought him home. A month later, a lightning bolt hit a transformer next to our house, sending Pete over a six-foot wooden fence and into the woods, there to be entangled in a mass of barbed wire on my neighbor’s property. The result left his front legs cut to the bone at his chest level, an open wound 18 inches across and nine inches tall. More>
